Roblox Data Loss: Why Your Progress Disappeared and What to Do (2026)

Lost your progress in a Roblox game? Learn why data loss happens, who can restore it, what to do as a player, and how developers recover data from DataStore versions.

You log into your favorite Roblox game and your coins, pets or levels are gone. Or it says your data didn't load and you're back at level 1.

This article explains why Roblox data loss happens, who can actually fix it, and what to do next, whether you're a player or the developer of the game.

The short answer: In-game progress is stored by each game's developer, not by Roblox support. Roblox can't restore it. Only the game's developer can, and only if they kept DataStore versions or backups. Your Roblox inventory, Robux and avatar items are a separate system and are not affected.

Is Roblox data loss a Roblox problem or a game problem?

Two very different things get called "data loss":

What you lostWhere it's storedWho can fix it
Avatar items, Robux, badgesRoblox accountRoblox Support
Coins, levels, pets, in-game itemsThe game's own DataStoreThe game's developer
Progress in a game after an updateThe game's DataStore or its codeThe game's developer

So if you lost in-game progress, contacting Roblox usually won't help. Contact the developer. Most games have a Discord server linked on their game page.

How to tell if it's widespread:

  • Check status.roblox.com for incidents on DataStore or data services.
  • Look at the game's Discord, comments and social accounts. If many players report it, it's a server-side issue and the developer is probably already working on it.
  • If only you are affected, it may be a save that failed at the wrong moment (see below).

Why does data loss happen in Roblox games?

There are a handful of causes that account for most cases.

1. The developer's code overwrote the data

Games that use SetAsync blindly can overwrite good data with old or empty data. This happens more easily during teleports, crashes and laggy shutdowns.

2. The data failed to load and the game kept going

If the DataStore is unavailable when you join, a badly coded game lets you play with a fresh, empty profile. Then it saves that empty profile over your real one. You see it as "my progress is gone".

Well-made games kick you instead. If you've seen the message "DataStore lock lost, please rejoin", that's the protection working. See what DataStore lock lost means.

3. Two servers used the same data at once

Joining from two devices, or a fast rejoin, can make two servers hold your data. The one that saves last wins, and it may have the older version.

4. The server closed before saving

If the game doesn't handle shutdown (BindToClose), players in a closing server can lose everything since the last save.

5. A bug in an update

Changing the data structure without migrating old saves can make old profiles look empty or broken.

6. Roblox-side outages

During incidents, DataStore requests can fail or be throttled. Games that don't retry or handle errors lose the save. Reports of data loss tend to cluster around these incidents. If you're reading this in 2026 and many players of one game are affected at the same time, check the status page first.

What to do as a player after losing progress

  1. Stop playing for now. If your data is currently empty and the game keeps saving, you might overwrite an older recoverable version. Playing more won't make the recovery easier.
  2. Don't spend Robux to "get it back" until you know the developer can restore it.
  3. Contact the developer through the game's Discord, group wall or social media. Give them:
    • Your username and UserId
    • The date and time it happened (with timezone)
    • What exactly is missing (coins, items, levels)
    • What you were doing when it happened (teleporting, joining, a server shutdown)
  4. Be patient and specific. "My data is gone" is hard to act on. "I lost 3 hours of progress at 18:40 UTC after a server restart" is not.
  5. Don't contact Roblox Support for in-game data. They can't restore it.

How developers can recover lost data

If you're the developer and a player (or many) lost data, you have one real option: DataStore versioning. Roblox keeps previous versions of each key for a limited time, so you can read the value from before the problem happened. Check the official DataStore documentation for the current retention period, because you have to act inside that window.

Step 1: Find the key and its versions

You can inspect keys in the Creator Hub's Data Stores manager for your experience, or read them from a script:

local DataStoreService = game:GetService("DataStoreService")
local store = DataStoreService:GetDataStore("PlayerData_v1")

local key = "Player_123456" -- the exact key your game uses

local pages = store:ListVersionsAsync(key, Enum.SortDirection.Descending)
local versions = pages:GetCurrentPage()

for _, info in versions do
	print(info.Version, DateTime.fromUnixTimestampMillis(info.CreatedTime):ToIsoDate())
end

Find a version created before the data was lost.

Step 2: Read that version

local value, keyInfo = store:GetVersionAsync(key, "the-version-string")
print(value)

Check that it contains what the player says they had.

Step 3: Write it back safely

store:UpdateAsync(key, function()
	return value
end)

A few rules for this step:

  • Do it while the player is offline, or their live server will overwrite your fix.
  • Test on a copy key first (key .. "_test") if you're unsure of the data format.
  • If you use ProfileStore or ProfileService, the stored value is wrapped in the library's own structure. Restore the whole value from the old version, not just Data, or you'll break the profile.
  • Keep a log of who was restored and from which version.

Step 4: Find out why it happened

Restoring data without finding the cause means it happens again. Look at your logs for failed saves, teleport timing, and SetAsync calls that skip conflict checks.

How to prevent Roblox data loss

Prevention is cheaper than recovery. The minimum for any game with real players:

  • Use session locking (ProfileStore or ProfileService), don't reinvent it.
  • Use UpdateAsync rather than SetAsync.
  • Wrap DataStore calls in pcall and retry with backoff.
  • Kick players when data fails to load, never let them play on a temporary profile.
  • Save on BindToClose.
  • Version your data structure and write migrations.
  • Log every failed save and alert yourself.

FAQ

Can Roblox restore my lost game progress?

No. Roblox doesn't have access to a per-game backup of your progress. The developer controls that data and can restore it only if they have DataStore versions or their own backups.

How long do I have to report data loss?

As soon as possible. DataStore versions are retained only for a limited period, so the sooner the developer looks, the more likely they can restore it.

Why do I see "data loss" only after an update?

Updates that change the data format without a migration can make old saves appear empty. The data is often still there, and the developer can fix it by correcting the code.

Is there a "Roblox data loss 2026" event?

Data loss reports tend to appear in waves, usually connected to a game's update or a Roblox service incident. Check status.roblox.com and the game's community channels to see if your case is part of one.

My game lost everyone's data. What's the first thing to do?

Take the game offline or disable saving to stop further overwrites, then go to the DataStore versions and find the last good one. Communicate with your players early. Silence is what makes a data loss into a crisis.

Losing progress is painful, but it's rarely permanent if the developer has versioning and acts quickly. And if you build games yourself, the best time to protect your players' data is before launch.
